The idea for the 4th Whale Birthday Card came after watching the documentary ‘Our Planet’ a collaboration between WWF and Netflix. In the ‘Coastal Seas’ episode from Season 1, we meet many wonderful sea creatures that sparked the imagination behind this design.

This card is also a picture that contains the heart for the ocean environment and our precious Earth. I hope that the wish to protect the Earth and the sea environment with my sea friends(whale, turtle, starfish) will be delivered to kids.

In the East, whales symbolize power and mystery. They are seen as representations of deep-sea wisdom and immense strength. In the West, whales are considered mysterious and sometimes fearful, and are recognized as noble creatures that must be protected as objects of natural grandeur and awe.
What about turtles? In the East, turtles have been considered sacred animals for thousands of years, symbolizing longevity, wisdom, and stability. Their shells are seen as miniature versions of the universe, representing heaven and earth. In the West, turtles are often seen as symbols of patience, perseverance, and sincerity through fables that highlight their steady, unwavering progress.
동양에서의 고래는 힘과 신비로움의 상징입니다. 물속 깊은 세계의 지혜와 거대한 힘을 상징합니다. 서양에서는 신비롭고 때로는 두려운 존재로 여겨지기도 하며, 자연의 위대함과 경외의 대상으로 보호해야 할 고귀한 생명체로 인식되고 있습니다.
거북이는 어떨까요? 동양에서는 수천 년 동안 장수, 지혜, 안정의 상징이며 신성한 동물로 여겨졌습니다. 등껍질이 하늘과 땅을 뜻하는 우주의 축소판이라는 철학적 상징도 있습니다. 서양에서의 거북이는 느리지만 꾸준히 나아가는 존재로, 우화를 통해 인내심, 끈기, 성실함의 상징으로 자주 등장합니다.
This card has a whale swimming in the rough waves of the sea. The whale is the main character of the birthday with the title of 4th Birthday and is freely swimming in the sea. The movement of the whale along with the curving line of the waves symbolizes the journey of the birthday child growing into a new age.
The whale is not alone. With its friend, the turtle, and a school of fish gathered, too. The turtle moves slowly and steadily, representing perseverance and the steady progress of growing up. Schools of small fish make the atmosphere even more lively, and starfish shine like stars in the sea. Altogether, the vibrant seascape offers a magical moment for the birthday child.

Handmade birthday cards are drawn and colored by me with colored pencils. I used Tombow colored pencils that I bought more than 30 years ago, and the paper is the papaer is a CERGIO colored pencils sketchbook from Shinhan Commerce. It’s a little thicker than the ARTISTS 100 CROQUIS SKETCH BOOK I used before.
핸드 메이드 생일 카드는 제가 직접 색연필로 그리고 색칠합니다. 구입한지 30년이 훨씬 지난 Tombow 색연필을 사용했고 종이는 신한커머스의 CERGIO 색연필 전용 스케치북입니다. 이전에 사용했던 ARTISTS 100 CROQUIS SKETCH BOOK 보다 조금 더 두꺼워요.
